Shanta Gillott
Do I actually have to give you the book?
Charles Adrian
The second one you should give me.
Shanta Gillott
Oh. Okay.
Charles Adrian
Is that a problem? Not everybody does.
Shanta and Charles Adrian
[laughter]
Charles Adrian
You don't want to get rid of it? You don't want to part with it?
Shanta Gillott
[speaking over] No, no, I can. Because I can get another version. That's fine.
Charles Adrian
Okay. I can also give it back to you later.
Shanta Gillott
No, no, no. I can give it to you.
Shanta and Charles Adrian
[laughter]
Charles Adrian
Yeah, and I'm going to give you this one.
Shanta Gillott
Okay. No, that's fine. I hadn't actually thought that I was actually... No, that's obviously fine.
Charles Adrian
It's not really a fair trade but I'll explain why in a min... in a bit. Okay. Are you ready?
Shanta Gillott
Yup.
Charles Adrian
Hello and welcome to the 152nd Page One. This is the 126th Second Hand Book Factory. I'm Charles Adrian and my guest today, in Old Amersham...
Shanta Gillott
[whoops]
Shanta and Charles Adrian
[laughter]
Charles Adrian
Yeah. Props for Old Amersham... in... in her house, which was our grandmother's house, is my sister... my older sister Shanta.
Jingle
You're listening to Page One, the book podcast.
Shanta Gillott
Old Amersham, I would like to state, was a Gold Winner in Britain In Bloom...
Charles Adrian
Oh yes!
Shanta Gillott
... for 2018. So... Very proud.
Charles Adrian
[speaking over] Congratulations to Old Amersham. That is... Yeah... That... You must be very proud.
Shanta Gillott
Very proud. Very proud.
Charles Adrian
And wasn't there...? There was some... You were on television, no? Not you, but Old Amersham was on television.
Shanta Gillott
Yes. Old Amersham was on Britain In Bloom in April.
Charles Adrian
[impressed] Mmm! I haven't watched it yet. Can I still watch it?
Shanta Gillott
Hopefully.
Charles Adrian
Okay, it's a bit of a...
Shanta Gillott
You can watch it here in your grandmother's house. I've got it recorded.
Charles Adrian
[laughs] You recorded it!
Shanta and Charles Adrian
[laughter]
Charles Adrian
That's so nice. And it's quite nice to know that, as we're looking out, like... I'm looking out at your garden and it's looking really nice. There are some pansies that are looking just beautiful at the moment.
Shanta Gillott
Yes, they're... Yes. They're doing well. I planted them in October.
Charles Adrian
They have come out really, really nicely.
Shanta Gillott
[speaking over] So they've come out...
Charles Adrian
And what are the flowers behind them? The tall ones?
Shanta Gillott
Well, they are Jamie's addition.
Charles Adrian
[musing] Mmm.
Shanta Gillott
Not quite sure what they are. He's got a plan.
Charles Adrian
Because they're kind of spiky. They're beautiful as well.
Shanta Gillott
Yeah.
Charles Adrian
[speaking over] Really nice.
Shanta Gillott
He's got a plan for the garden, so...
Charles Adrian
Okay.
Shanta Gillott
There's some things that I'm not quite sure what they are.
Charles Adrian
Very exciting!
Shanta and Charles Adrian
[laughter]
Shanta Gillott
So how do you describe yourself, Shanta?
Shanta Gillott
So I describe myself as a... Ah, that's an interesting question, isn't it: "How do you describe yourself?" I... Slightly off the wall, slightly eccentric...
Charles Adrian
[laughs]
Shanta Gillott
[laughs] ... happy, fun, enthusiastic person. I'm a nursery nurse, I work with children... 3 to 4-year-olds. I'm a Forest School leader, so I take them out into the woods, and I'm a Brown Owl for 7 to 10-year-old girls.
Charles Adrian
Mmm hmm.
Shanta Gillott
And I take them away. So. That's me.
Charles Adrian
Very nice. Yeah, I think that's... that's a very... Wow, that's a very good, full, potted description, actually. I'm impressed that you've just...
Shanta Gillott
[laughs] Yup.
Charles Adrian
... come up with that off the... off the cuff.
Shanta Gillott
There you go.
Charles Adrian
That's really good. What is the book that...
[page turning]
Charles Adrian
... you like?
Shanta Gillott
So, I would describe myself as, until three months ago, long-term single. So...
Charles Adrian
Like Ms Samantha Mann. [laughs]
Shanta Gillott
Ms Samantha Mann. [laughs] Yes, exactly. So maybe Ms Samantha Mann was based on me. She looks a bit like me.
Charles Adrian
[speaking over] My alter ego. [laughs]
Shanta Gillott
So. My alter ego. Lots of people...
Charles Adrian
[speaking over] She's not based on you at all, Shanta.
Shanta Gillott
[laughs]
Charles Adrian
Let's just make that clear. [laughs]
Shanta Gillott
Let's... No! Looks-wise, rather than...
Shanta and Charles Adrian
[laughter]
Charles Adrian
Well, that's just because, when I put a wig on, I look like you. [laughs] There's no more thought gone into it than that. Okay. Good.
Shanta Gillott
I would like to have her figure, though.
Charles Adrian
[speaking over] Glad we've got that out of the way. [laughs]
Shanta Gillott
[speaking over] Anyway. We've got that out of the way. So I would describe myself as having been long-term single. I've had a few relationships but nothing that's been very successful until the last three months. But, um... So my... my book that got me through some of those dark moments of singleness was The Ladybird Book Of Dating.
Charles Adrian
[laughs]
Shanta Gillott
And I'd like to share with those single people out there that there is hope and that The Ladybird Book Of Dating will really help you to...
Charles Adrian
[laughs]
Shanta Gillott
... either deal with dating, deal with singleness and know that you are not alone.
Charles Adrian
[affirmative] Mmm hmm.
Shanta Gillott
And it gives you a bit of light when you're feeling a bit dark... that you are the only single person in the world. So, the first page starts off brilliantly:
Dating is a fun way of meeting someone who is as terrified of dying alone as you are.
Finding this person takes time. Cupid's arrow can strike when you least expect.
Angela has been struck by Cupid’s arrow and is going to live happily ever after.
Charles Adrian
[laughs] Very confident. Is there a picture of Angela?
Shanta Gillott
And there is a picture of Angela. She's lying on the ground, having just been struck by Cupid's bow.
Charles Adrian
[laughs] Oh my god. It's like a...
Shanta Gillott
[laughs]
Charles Adrian
Yeah, she really has been killed by that arrow. Oh my. She's wearing some kind of fake Celtic outfit, I think.
Shanta Gillott
Well, that might be...
Charles Adrian
[speaking over] I wonder what that was originally the illustration from. She's got, like... She's got some kind of, like, leather trousers with... with ties keeping them up. Do you know what I mean?
Shanta Gillott
Yes!
Charles Adrian
And a pink... a pink cloak. It's extraordinary image [sic].
Shanta Gillott
And I would like to actually... in a... in a podcast first, um... share the last page...
Charles Adrian
Oh!
Shanta Gillott
... because there is hope.
Charles Adrian
Okay!
Shanta Gillott
It is Barney and Leigh's wedding day. They have certainly come a long way from their first date.
They have learned to suppress their personalities and pretend...
Shanta and Charles Adrian
[laughter]
Shanta Gillott
... they want the same things, so they will be able to put up with each other for several years.
Everyone is happy for them.
Their story is over.
And here they are on their wedding day.
Charles Adrian
Oh my word. A real prince and princess.
Shanta Gillott
So there is hope for everyone out there...
Charles Adrian
[laughs]
Shanta Gillott
... that you might be struck by Cupid's arrow like Angela...
Charles Adrian
[affirmative] Mmm hmm.
Shanta Gillott
... and end up like Leah and Barney on your...
Charles Adrian
[speaking over] Suppressing your personalities. What a wonderful, optimistic story. Thank you, Shanta.
Shanta Gillott
So there you go. I'm sharing that with all singletons out there...
Charles Adrian
[laughs] Yes.
Shanta Gillott
... that there is hope and that there is a book there for you to give you a bit of a laugh and a giggle when you're feeling a bit down.
Charles Adrian
Oh, that's so nice. Thank you. That's really... That's a brilliant choice. That's wonderful. Okay. I've got...
[page turning]
Charles Adrian
... for you something that's not a million miles away. And I don't know whether you will have read this before. I have cheated today.
Shanta Gillott
Okay.
Charles Adrian
Because, normally, the point is that I'm supposed to give you a book that's from my shelf... from my bookshelf. But this... I don't own this book. This came from a family bookshelf.
Shanta and Charles Adrian
[laughter]
Shanta Gillott
Ah! A Sophie Kinsella!
Charles Adrian
Have you read this? This is...
Shanta Gillott
No I haven't.
Charles Adrian
Ah! This is Remember Me. And I thought, um... So, I've been I've been really scratching my head trying to find a book for you. Um...
Shanta Gillott
We should explain to listeners that I don't really read.
Charles Adrian
Yeah, you're not much of a reader...
Shanta Gillott
No, I'm not much of a reader.
Charles Adrian
... and I remember... So, I remember when we were teenagers, you... we got the videos for Mansfield Park because you had to read it for school...
Shanta Gillott
Yup.
Charles Adrian
... and it took hours, didn't it...
Shanta Gillott
Yes.
Charles Adrian
... because it was such a long adaptation. Um... So I remembered that. So I thought of different things. Like, I thought, maybe... I might have given you a book called The Imaginary by A. F. Harrold...
Shanta Gillott
[affirmative] Mmm hmm.
Charles Adrian
... who was one of my previous guests, actually. And it's... I thought that might be quite good for your brownies. But it's so... it's really dark. And I don't think you would have liked it.
Shanta Gillott
No.
Shanta Gillott
It's a really good book but I think you would have found it a bit upsetting. And then... Because it's about having imaginary friends but then what happens when... when you don't want those any more? It's really... it's very sad. And then I thought maybe I'd give you My Family And Other Animals...
Shanta Gillott
Oh yes. I'm watching The Durrells.
Charles Adrian
... because I thought you... yeah, you like that on TV...
Shanta Gillott
I like The Durrells.
Charles Adrian
But then I saw this and I thought: this, actually, I think you might enjoy reading.
Shanta Gillott
Yes, I do... I like Sophie Kinsella.
Charles Adrian
Mmm. I thought you might do. I thought that was...
Shanta Gillott
She was going to be one of my choices, actually, but I went down a different route.
Charles Adrian
Okay. Oh, well, that's good. Well. So I'm going to give you this. I think this would make a really good romcom. I'm not the only person who thinks that. I looked it up. On YouTube, someone's written... someone's... sorry, not written... On YouTube, someone's made a fake trailer for a film that has not yet been made... for this film.
Shanta Gillott
[laughs]
Charles Adrian
I think, if you, like... if it was made seriously, it would make a really, really good romcom. It has has good characters. It has really good locations. Although it was written in 2008, I think we're still obsessed with the kind of very grand, fancy flats that you might get... like, really high-end London flats.
Shanta Gillott
Yup.
Charles Adrian
That's where most of it's set. And it's a bit like... it's a similar kind of idea to Isn't It Romantic, which came out recently on Netflix but I didn't really like that film all that much. I don't think they took it really seriously.
Shanta Gillott
Okay.
Charles Adrian
Or they didn't.... It felt like they didn't really love romcoms.
Shanta Gillott
No, you've got to love a romcom...
Charles Adrian
You have to.
Shanta Gillott
... to make it work.
Charles Adrian
You have to love it, don't you? And you have to, really... it's not...
Shanta Gillott
Believe it.
Charles Adrian
Exactly. You have... Yeah, it's not something... You can't make fun of it while you're making it...
Shanta Gillott
No.
Charles Adrian
... I think. So this is about a woman, Lexi Smart, who... She wakes up... Basically, she has a head injury and she wakes up and she's lost three years of her life. And so, she's gone from being somebody who just works in an office to being the... the s... manager. She's a... She's manager of a department. She's married to this millionaire. She's incredibly successful. She has beautiful clothes. She has a housekeeper. She has an amazing car. All in three years. This huge transformation has happened and she doesn't know how it's happened.
Shanta Gillott
Ooo!
Charles Adrian
And so the book is, kind of, her discovering what that... whether she likes her new life and also how it changed.
Shanta Gillott
Yeah.
Charles Adrian
So here's the...
Shanta Gillott
Because sometimes things just happen, don't they, and you don't realise.
Charles Adrian
Well, exactly. And it seemed... Like, at the beginning, I was thinking: Three years isn't very long for all of this to change. But by the end of the book, I thought: Yeah. No. I'm persuaded that you could do this. And so it has a lot to do with... obviously love. And what do you want from a relationship... Friendship as well.
Shanta Gillott
So this is the next stage from dating.
Charles Adrian
Exactly! Yeah. And in a way, what happened to Lexi is that she missed out on all the dating because she doesn't remember that bit.
Shanta Gillott
Oh! Oh!
Charles Adrian
Yes. It's rather sad
Shanta Gillott
Oh. I will have to read it.
Charles Adrian
Um. So:
PROLOGUE
Of all the crap ,crap, crappy nights I've ever had in the whole of my crap life....
Okay. Warning: language.
Shanta and Charles Adrian
[laughter]
Charles Adrian
On a scale of one to ten we're talking… a minus six. And it's not like I even have very high standards.
Rain splatters [sic] down my collar as I shift from one blistered foot to another. I'm holding my denim jacket over my head as a makeshift umbrella, but it's not exactly waterproof. I just want to find a taxi, get home, kick off these stupid boots and run a nice hot bath. But we've been waiting here for ten minutes and there's no sign of a cab.
My toes are agony. I'm never buying shoes from Cut Price Fashion again. I bought these boots last week in the sale (flat black patent. I only ever wear flats). They were half a size too small but the girl said they would stretch, and that they made my legs look really long. And I believed her. Honestly, I'm the world's biggest sucker.
We're all standing together on the corner of some street in south-west London I've never been to before with music pounding faintly from the club below our feet. Carolyn's sister is a promoter and got us discounted entry, so that's why we schlepped all the way here. Only now we have...
And that's what you get. That's the end of the first page.
Shanta Gillott
Do I not get the end of the sentence?
Charles Adrian
No.
Shanta Gillott
Oh.
Charles Adrian
No, I'm... I'm quite strict about that. It is really the first page. Yeah.
Shanta Gillott
Okay.
Charles Adrian
You have to read it yourself. And, on the second page, you're going to find out about her boyfriend Loser Dave. I quite like that she has a boyfriend called Loser Dave.
Shanta and Charles Adrian
[laughter]
Shanta Gillott
Well, thank you very much. I will enjoy it.
Charles Adrian
[speaking over] And also her friends Deb and Fi. I think you will. l think you will enjoy it.
Shanta Gillott
[speaking over] Yes. I will. She's someone I can read. So.
[page turning]
Charles Adrian
Yeah.
Shanta Gillott
So, now, is it my...
Charles Adrian
It's your turn to re... Yeah, exactly... The book that you've got for me.
Shanta Gillott
Right. So we're obviously on a theme.
Charles Adrian
Yup.
Shanta Gillott
So we... we're doing dating.
Charles Adrian
[affirmative] Mmm hmm.
Shanta Gillott
We're in the relationship.
Charles Adrian
Yup.
Shanta Gillott
We're helping you in the relationship. So. This is a book that I actually find really useful.
Charles Adrian
[affirmative] Mmm hmm.
Shanta Gillott
It's called The Five Love Languages: The Secret To Love That Lasts.
Charles Adrian
[takes a breath] Ooo!
Shanta Gillott
So I don't know if you know about this.
Charles Adrian
Well, I've heard of love languages, but only from, like, people talking about them.
Shanta Gillott
So there are five... This... There are five love languages...
Charles Adrian
[affirmative] Mmm hmm.
Shanta Gillott
... and this is the way that people share how they love somebody.
Charles Adrian
Yup.
Shanta Gillott
So this can be, you know, a relationship... a male female or male male or female female... or, you know, friends, family, anyone in your life... how... how you share that you love somebody. So there... there are five. One is words of affirmation. So: you look beautiful... you're great at doing this... you know... someone might write cards with lovely messages in it. Quality time. So: spending time with somebody, coming home from work early, making time for a date day, making time for a friend, going out somewhere... you know... turning the computer off, turning the television off, spending that quality time with someone.
Charles Adrian
And so, wait. So, is that... that... That means... So not just filling the time that happens to be free with your... with your partner or your friend, but actually creating a bit of time...
Shanta Gillott
I think it's...
Charles Adrian
... that is specially for them.
Shanta Gillott
Yes. I think it's creating time...
Charles Adrian
Yeah. [affirmative] Mmm hmm.
Shanta Gillott
... that's quality... You know, not just going: Well, I'm here.
Charles Adrian
I'm here. I have got nothing else to do.
Shanta Gillott
Yeah.
Charles Adrian
Yeah. Mmm hmm.
Shanta Gillott
This is... this is saying: this is our time to spend together.
Charles Adrian
Yup.
Shanta Gillott
Um... Receiving gifts. So, I believe Lissa, our sister, is... this is her love language. She loves giving gifts.
Charles Adrian
[affirmative] Mmm. Definitely.
Shanta Gillott
And you see this with other people. Their love language is giving you something. I don't think it's mine, giving gifts. [laughs]
Charles Adrian
[laughs] Yeah, I think... Neither of us are very good at gifts, are we?
Shanta Gillott
No. We're not. We're not. You know...
Charles Adrian
I still haven't given you a birthday present.
Shanta Gillott
I don't need... I don't need a birthday present. It's absolutely fine.
Charles Adrian
[laughs]
Shanta Gillott
Um. So, receiving gifts. You know, some people might say: Well, my boyfriend, my husband doesn't love me because he never gives me any flowers.
Charles Adrian
Yeah. Mmm hmm.
Shanta Gillott
Well, his love language may not be giving you anything. He does love you.
Charles Adrian
[affirmative] Mmm.
Shanta Gillott
My brother might not love me because he didn't give me a present. Well, I know you do. You know?
Charles Adrian
[affirmative] Mmm hmm. Yes. Yes.
Shanta Gillott
It's not about... For me, I don't need to receive any... you know.
Charles Adrian
[affirmative] Mmm hmm.
Shanta Gillott
Acts of service. So, someone might say: Well, my husband never buys me flowers but he says: But I put the bin out every week...
Charles Adrian
[affirmative] Mmm. Right.
Shanta Gillott
... I change the light bulbs, I do the washing up, I do the hoovering, I do the gardening, I do... you know. So that's their acts of service. It's doing something for someone else.
Charles Adrian
Yeah. Picking you up from the station, which you did today. [affirmative] Mmm hmm.
Shanta Gillott
Picking you up from the station, helping in the garden...
Charles Adrian
[affirmative] Mmm.
Shanta Gillott
You know, doing something for someone else. That's their acts of service. And some people, it's physical touch. So, giving them a hug, giving them... you know, being close, holding hands. That's what's important for them.
Charles Adrian
[affirmative] Mmm hmm.
Shanta Gillott
And I think, actually... I just think it's really important. It helps you to understand everybody. Your colleagues at work, your friends, your family, your partner. Just... If you can understand where they're coming from, what their love language is, it can really help in your relationship because you're not battling against them...
Charles Adrian
[affirmative] Mmm.
Shanta Gillott
... going: Well, they don't love me because they don't say they do. Well, they might not say they do. They might not be that person that goes around going 'I love you'. They might be that person that buys you roses. You know, it's... So, I think it's a very interesting book and I think it... it just can help you in more ways than...
Charles Adrian
[affirmative] Mmm. Yeah, I can. Yeah, that... I can believe that.
Shanta Gillott
So, do I... do I read you the...
Charles Adrian
Yes, read me the first page.
Shanta Gillott
So:
What Happens to Love After the Wedding?
Charles Adrian
Oh, well this is... I mean, this... You couldn't have choreographed this better, Shanta.
Shanta Gillott
[laughs]
Charles Adrian
You have really... Because that's... that's exactly what the book Remember Me is about: what happens to love after the wedding. Because she finds herself married...
Shanta Gillott
Oh!
Charles Adrian
... and then she's got to go: Well, what now?
Shanta Gillott
Well, then...
Charles Adrian
This is so good. Okay, great.
Shanta Gillott
There we go.
Charles Adrian
Yeah, if she had had this book to read, things would have been easier for her.
Shanta Gillott
This might have helped her.
Charles Adrian
Brilliant.
Shanta Gillott
At 30,000 feet, somewhere between Buffalo and Dallas, he put his magazine in his seat pocket, turned in my direction and asked: “What kind of work do you do?”
“I do marriage counselling and lead ma... lead marriage enrichment semi... seminars,” I said matter-of-factly.
“I’ve been wanting to ask someone this for a long time, he said. “What happens to the love after you get married?”
Relinquishing my hopes of getting a nap, I asked: “What do you mean?”
“Well,” he said, “I have been married three times, and each time, it was wonderful before we got married, but somehow, after the wedding it all fell apart. All the love I thought I had for her and the love she seemed to have for me evaporated. I am a fairly intelligent person. I operate a successful business, but I do n... don't understand it.”
“How long were you married?” I asked.
“The first one lasted about ten years. The second time, we were...”
Charles Adrian
Hmm. Yes.
Shanta Gillott
And I'm not allowed to finish the sentence.
Charles Adrian
I know. It's frustrating, isn't it? But there's already a lot on that page. That's such a bleak question, isn't it? What happens to the love after marriage?
Shanta Gillott
It is. It is.
Charles Adrian
Wow. You really... I really feel his experience.
Shanta Gillott
So, and... and I think, you know, a lot of people think, you know, marriage... and it's... and it's the wedding. And then it's all going to be amazing but actually you've got to work at it and you've got to work out who that other person is, what makes them happy.
Charles Adrian
Right.
Shanta Gillott
And it may not be what makes you happy that makes them happy.
Charles Adrian
Right. Yeah.
Shanta Gillott
You've got to step into their shoes. And so, the book has... goes through all the different... all the different ones and then you have bits that you can fill in to find out what you are.
Charles Adrian
Um. That's good. Yeah. That's very useful.
Shanta Gillott
And then it has, you know, your turn. What does your spouse do to make you feel significant? How do you... How about what you do for them? And...
Charles Adrian
[affirmative] Mmm.
Shanta Gillott
... you know, it has questions for you... to help you.
Charles Adrian
That's really nice. Oh, wow. Shanta, that's a brilliant book.
Shanta Gillott
So I hope that helps you in your relationships and friendships and...
Charles Adrian
I'm sure it will. Thank you so much.
Shanta Gillott
But I found it very useful.
Charles Adrian
I think that's going to be amazing. Thank you so much.
Shanta Gillott
[speaking over] [indistinct] a self-help book and... yeah.
Charles Adrian
Yeah. Brilliant. This has been wonderful, Shanta. I'm so pleased I finally... after 126 of these...
Shanta Gillott
[laughs]
Charles Adrian
... got round to [laughs] doing one with you.
Shanta Gillott
Yeah. I mean, a non-reader. You've done quite well. [laughs]
Charles Adrian
Yeah. [laughs] I think that's why it took me so long to ask you. It's like: 'Oh no! It's really not Shanta's thing. What if she's... What if she says no?'
Shanta Gillott
Well, I... Yeah. It's been very... it's been enlightening.
Charles Adrian
Brilliant.
Shanta Gillott
So thank you. And I will read Remember Me.
Charles Adrian
Wonderful. Thank you so much.
Shanta Gillott
Thank you very much, Charles Adrian.
Charles Adrian
[laughs]
